Two things worth knowing before any test
A positive result is not automatically an allergy
A positive specific IgE test shows that the immune system recognises an allergen and has produced IgE antibodies. That is called sensitization. A person can be sensitized to a food they tolerate perfectly well.
Allergy means sensitization plus symptoms
An allergy is diagnosed when sensitization is combined with reproducible symptoms on exposure to that allergen. This is why a result is always read together with the clinical history, never on its own.

About specific IgE testing with ImmunoCAP
ImmunoCAP is a laboratory technology used to measure specific IgE antibodies in blood. It uses a cellulose solid phase with a high allergen binding capacity and a fluorescent enzyme immunoassay, known as FEIA, to quantify the result.
Testing can be performed with whole allergen extracts, which show sensitization to an allergen source, or with molecular components, which can distinguish primary sensitization from cross-reactivity. Additional markers such as tryptase and eosinophil cationic protein can support the assessment in selected clinical situations.
Important: the presence of information about ImmunoCAP on this site does not mean that testing is necessary for every person, that a result confirms an allergy on its own, or that the technology replaces medical assessment.
